ANALYSIS
This game marks the 11th all-time meeting between these teams and the series is tied at 5-5. They met in week three of the season with the Danger winning 59-23. Nebraska jumped out to a 52-14 halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half of that win. The Blizzard turned the tables on the Danger in week 11 in Green Bay, winning their first game of the season by a 47-25 count. This is the rubber match. The teams have each gone through roster overhauls during the season (more on that below). This is the third and final game of the season between the teams. The Danger have an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a win and the Blizzard could pick up their first road win of the season.
After going 0-5 to start the season, the Blizzard released head coach Chris Williams and replaced him with assistant coach and former Blizzard player Corey Roberson. The week 11 win over the Danger was Roberson's first as head coach of the team. Roberson brought in Bryan Hicks as the new quarterback. Hicks improved weekly until last week's blowout loss to the Arizona Rattlers. He was pulled from the game early in the second quarter after throwing two interceptions. It has not been announced whether Hicks was replaced due to lack of productivity or if it was from undisclosed injury. The Rattlers took a 28-0 first half lead before Johnson's two-yard run put the Blizzard on the board. Johnson also ran for a touchdown in the third quarter. Still, the Blizzard managed just 26 points in the game. It remains to be seen which quarterback will get the start in this game.
Hicks has completed 61.6 of his passes this season and averages 135.5 passing yards per game; a number that was skewed downward by his early departure last week. He has thrown 8 touchdown passes and 4 picks on the season. Johnson went 4 of 7 for 24 yards and an interception against the Rattlers. A bright spot over the past couple of weeks is the conversion of defensive back and kick returner B.J. Hill to running back. Hill has been outstanding all season at his previous positions. He's continued his success on the offensive side of the ball. Hill rushed 17 times for 91 yards and a touchdown against the Rattlers. He rushed 12 times for 86 yards against the Danger two weeks ago. He leads the IFL with 3 kickoffs returned for touchdowns. Jereme Jones leads the team in receptions with 22, while Chris Malott has 21. They have accumulated 262 and 261 receiving yards, respectively. Malott leads the team with 6 touchdown catches, The Blizzard signed IFL veteran receiver Tim Lukas on May 16. Josh Jenkins has 5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble to go with his team-high 47.5 total tackles. Robert Metz is the team leader in sacks with 4.5 and has 6.5 tackles for loss, while Brian Boudreaux leads with 8 tackles for loss. Jordan Endries returns to take over the kicking duties for Green Bay. He is 5 of 13 of his field goal attempts, with all eight of those misses coming from 33 yards or further.
The Danger, still strongly positioned in the playoff race, have dropped five straight games. Prior to last week's contest at the Sioux Falls Storm, head coach Mark Stoute made sweeping changes to the roster, including at the quarterback position. Released was Jesse Scroggins III, who had started seven games since taking over for Damien Fleming, who suffered a season-ending injury in the second game of the season; ironically, a 59-23 win over the Blizzard. Scroggins was 2-5 as a starter with the Danger. The Blizzard also released backup quarterback Moses Skillon. Enter Gregory Hankerson, Jr., who threw for 3,770 yards in two seasons at Norfolk St. University. Nebraska was competitive in week 12 against the Sioux Falls Storm, but they were unable to overcome a tough Storm defense. The Danger will look to get back on the winning track and build momentum heading into a potential post-season run.
Hankerson and company put themselves in a position to overtake the Storm. With a stop and one more possession, they could have emerged with the win. Nevertheless, the team is now in Hankerson's hands. He will be the third signal caller to start for the Danger against the Blizzard this season. He completed 17 of 29 passes for 106 yards with 4 touchdowns and an interception, and rushed 10 times for 65 yards in his Danger debut. Mostly positive numbers, for sure. Angelo Pease is a fine complimentary rusher, but might see his opportunities cut due to Handerson's mobility. Pease is also a talented receiver out of the backfield with 9.1 yards per catch and 5 touchdowns. Eric Thomas is among the league's best when if comes to receivers. He is first in receiving yards (609), receiving yards per game (60.9) and touchdown catches (15). Thomas is as good as it gets and Hankerson will benefit from his presence. Gregory Dent, Jr. has caught 44 passes for 456 yards and 9 touchdowns. Xzavie Jackson, who has announced his retirement at the end of the season, has a league-leading 12 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks. Darion Monroe is a strong defender with his 65.5 total tackles, and linebacker Myke Tavarres has 7.5 tackles for loss to go with his 59.5 total tackles. Brad Hatfield is just 9 of 32 on field goal attempts with a long of 38 yards. Nineteen of his misses have come from 30 yards or beyond.
