WORCHESTER, MA - The Massachusetts Pirates are heading to the semifinals of the Indoor Football League playoffs.
The Pirates defense held the Bismarck Bucks to just seven points through three quarters as they came away with a 44-19 win in the First Round of the playoffs tonight at the DCU Center. Massachusetts, the second seed in the playoffs, will host an opponent to be determined on September 4 at 4:05 p.m. (pacific).
Massachusetts is awaiting the result of the First Round game between the eighth-seeded Sioux Falls Storm and top-seeded Arizona Rattlers. If the Rattlers win, the Pirates will host the Frisco Fighters (third seed); if the Storm win, the Storm will visit the Pirates. Massachusetts has now won nine straight in 2021.
It was the third win over the Bucks for the Pirates this season.
Regular Season Head to Head

July 10 - Pirates, 43, Bucks 38
After each team was stopped on their opening possession, the Bucks got on the board with a three-yard pass from Caleb Lewis to Isiah Stayhorn. Bismarck led at the end of the opening quarter, 7-0, with Massachusetts driving.
The Pirates scored early in the second quarter on Alejandro Bennifield's 10-yard touchdown strike around the right side to Thomas Owens. They took the lead on Laquvionte Gonzalez's two-yard run with 2:43 remaining. Josh Gable's 26-yard field goal with two seconds remaining in the quarter gave the Pirates a 17-7 lead at the intermission.
There were only three full possessions in the third quarter, with the only score coming from the Pirates on a 14-yard touchdown pass from Bennifield to Thomas Owens to give the Pirates a 24-7 lead heading into the final quarter.
Strayhorn's three- yard run brought he Bucks to within 11 just two minutes into the fourth. Bennifield and the Pirates answered with a two-yard touchdown run. After Aarion Maxey-Penton intercepted Lewis, the Pirates extended their lead to 44-13 with a touchdown strike from Sean Brackett to Justin Christian. Bismarck scored late on Lewis' touchdown toss to Mike Carrington.
