Breakdown
STEAMWHEELERS
Quad City will make the return to the field for their first full season in three years. The Steamwheelers played just a single game in 2020 before the season was postponed, and was eventually cancelled. They sat out 2021 due to the restrictions on arena capacity during the COVID-19 pandemic. After coming over to the IFL from Champions Indoor Football after the 2018 season, the Steamwheelers finished their first IFL season at 6-8, narrowly missing out on a playoff spot to due a regular season finale loss to the Tucson Sugar Skulls. With the team dormant last season Cory Ross went to Bismarck as offensive coordinator of the Bucks for a season. Ross is back in Moline and is putting together a roster aimed at making it to the postseason, and maybe further. Veteran indoor quarterbacks Aaron Aiken, Homer Causey and David Perkins, along with newcomer Jordan Barlow, are in camp competing for what is likely two spots at the position. The Steamweelers engineered a trade with the Bucks to bring in receiver Mike Carrigan, and added Keyvan Rudd as a target for whichever quarterback gets the start. Malik Duncan also comes over from the Bucks and former Storm Micah Eugene, Jr. should help shore up the defensive backfield. The rest of the defense promises to be young, but should grow over the course of the season.
STORM
Sioux Falls has made the playoffs the first 12 seasons they played in the IFL, including winning seven United Bowls. That streak continued last season though, with less-than-stellar results. The Storm, who typically finish in the top three in the league standings, all but snuck into the playoffs as the eighth and final seed with a 6-7 record. They fell in the first round to the Arizona Rattlers, 69-42. For the first time in eight years, Lorenzo Brown, Jr. will not suit up as the starting quarterback for the Storm. Former Bismarck Buck Tasleem Wilson, and newcomers Kobe Martin and Daniel Smith, were in camp battling for the quarterback position. Head coach Kurtiss Riggs also brought back running back Nate Chavious, one of the top rushers and kick returners in the league last season. JoJo Gause and Alonzo Moore were also brought into training camp as potential returnees to the team at receiver. Add to those names is Jawill Davis, who spent time in 2021 with the Canadian Football league's Toronto Argonauts. Defensively, returnees Marques Hendrix and Paris Taylor were re-signed at the linebacker position. Other notables in camp include defensive back Malik Brown and defensive lineman Carl Bevins. The Storm signed one of the IFL's top kickers, Sawyer Petre, from Spokane after the Shock were dismissed by the league in February 2022.
