Breakdown
STORM
It wasn't always pretty, but Sioux Falls did what it need to do in its season opener last week against the Quad City Steamwheelers. A win at home in the season opener is always welcome. The Storm now face a team to which they've not lost in five previous meetings. Former Buck Tasleem Wilson was effective in his Storm debut, save for an early interception which led to a pick-six for the Gladiators. Wilson completed 53 percent of his passes for 71 yards and added a touchdown. not surprisingly, the nimble quarterback also led all rushers in the game with 42 yards on the ground. Nate Chavious is a dangerous threat on the ground, as a receiver and a kick returner should Kurtiss Riggs opt to use him in that part of the game. Though it's an early sample size, Aaron Dilworth seems to have become Wilson's favorite receiver, catching his only touchdown pass in the opener. Jojo Gause and Jawil Davis should also continue to see some targets in the passing game. The defense is led by linebacker Marquis Hendrix, who led the team in tackles and had one of two sacks against the Steamwheelers, and was named IFL Defensive Player of the Week. Famus Hasty tallied three pass breakups. Sawyer Petre went two of three on field goal attempts with the only miss being of 61 yards (essentially an IFL punt), and recorded the IFL's first deuce of the season.
BUCKS
For the second-straight season, the Bucks opened up their season with a win over the Green Bay Blizzard. The Bucks now own a five-game winning streak over their Eastern Conference rivals. The Bucks are hoping to pick up their first-ever win against the Storm in their home opener. Tahj Tolbert impressed in his first start for the Bucks. He had the best outing of any IFL quarterback in week one. He completed over 59 percent of his passes for 119 yards with three touchdowns and a pick. The performance earned Tolbert Offensive Player of the Week honors. Benjamin Glines is the featured back, but was pushed backwards more than forward. John Brunner has emerged as a force in the passing game, catching a league-high eight receptions along with a pair of touchdowns. Former Shock and Wrangler Rob Brown had 51 yards and a score as well in the opener. But, the offense didn't do it alone. Aaquil and Patrick Macon each forced a fumble, and were among the team lead in tackles. Armonti Carey had the first sack of the season for the Bucks. Rob Brown's twin brother, Robert, is a force in the backfield. Bismarck will continue to look for players to step up and build on the strong defensive effort from the first game. Bismarck kicker Chase Allbaugh hit two of his three field goals, which turned out to be key for the Bucks' win. He also recorded a tackle.
