GLADIATORS
Duke City made a a bit of an awkward adjustment to the IFL after switching over from Champions Indoor Football after the 2019 season. After the league cancelled the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Gladiators attempted to make their mark in 2021. Behind one of the league's top offenses, they finished 7-7 and in fifth place in the final standings. That was good enough for a visit to the Iowa Barnstormers in the first round of the playoffs. They emerged with a win. However, they would narrowly fall to these Rattlers in the semifinals, 58-55. This season opener is their chance for revenge. The opening-day roster is vague since the team nor the league has updated it in some time. Per the team's report on Youtube, the team has brought back wide receivers Darryl Stonum and Gregory Dent, Jr. The former is full of the bulk of a traditional tight end, which would seem to make him an end zone threat. Dent is a veteran; most notably of the Nebraska Danger in 2019. Per SCtoC research, there is no quarterback listed through transactions, so that is a major question mark. Offensive linemen Jordan Mosley and Josiah Hunter were re-signed to the training camp roster and may, presumably find themselves on the field opening day. Another receiver, Vincent Gregory was signed to the camp roster after playing in 2019 for the Carolina Cobras of National Arena league.
RATTLERS
Arizona has been chomping at the bit to bring home a United Bowl trophy since they won the IFL championship in 2017. That was the Rattlers' first season in their current league after moving over from the Arena Football League prior to that season. The Rattlers have made appearances in two of the past three United Bowls -- losing both of those at home. Per the unverified training camp roster, they brought back most of their notable key players. That includes duel-threat quarterback Drew Powell, who took the Iowa Barnstormers to a championship in 2018, and led the Rattlers to the title game the past two seasons. Stalwart receiver and back Jamal Miles is also back on the offense, as is Nick LaSane, last year's featured back. In all, the Rattlers re-signed 19 players to the camp roster. The Rattlers also brought in J.T Stokes and Raheem Harvey at receiver -- both from the Bismarck Bucks. Curiously, Dillon Winfrey, who played defensive back in previous years, is listed as a re-signee at receiver. Some key defenders apparently returning are defensive backs Tyrell Pearson, Davontae Merriweather and Cory Butler-Byrd. Nikokas D'Avanzo will anchor the defensive line and Trey'von Williams should be the featured linebacker. Ernesto Lacayo, a veteran IFL and Arena Football League kicker is one of the best in the business and could make a difference, especially in tight games.
