Breakdown
SUGAR SKULLS
Tucson comes into its third season with a chip on it's collective shoulder. After finishing their inaugural 2019 season 7-7 with a trip to the playoffs, the Sugar Skulls finished in ninth place in the final standings, just missing the playoffs at 6-8, last year. The team enters 2022 with Dixie Wooten back as its head coach and hoping to make some noise. Enter Daquan Neal, the former Iowa Barnstormers' quarterback under Wooten in 2019. Neal was on the Sugar Skulls roster for 2020, but returned to Iowa for 2021. With the duel-threat Neal on board, the Sugar Skulls are looking to take the next step. Mike Jones, one of the top running backs in the IFL last season, returns to the Sugar Skulls, providing the team with a one-two punch out of the backfield. Tucson brought in one of the top receivers in the IFL in Quinten Pedroza, formerly of the Quad City Steamwheelers, and also added former Iowa pass catcher Carrington Thompson, Sr. The defense has a few less-than-recognizable names, but they are led by the likes of defensive linemen Tony Winslow and Isame Faciane, and linebacker Robert Rolle IV. Logan Justus has signed on as the team's kicker.
KNIGHT HAWKS
After a slow start, Vegas got its rhythm going around the second quarter as it pushed back the Northern Arizona Wranglers in their inaugural season opener, 22-9. The Knight Hawks' defense was strong throughout the game. It's a strong group and are anxious to face Neal, who was named IFL Most Valuable Player in 2019. They'll have their work cut out for them, as this Sugar Skulls team has more experienced players on their roster than the Wranglers. Dalton Sneed got the start at quarterback, but was replaced by Jaylon Henderson, the more mobile option, who threw for 71 yards with a touchdown while rushing for another score. Henderson likely gets the start here, though Sneed is waiting in the wings. Former Barnstormer Elad Covaliu provides a punch out of the backfield as both a rusher and receiver. Frank Brown seems to be the go to receiver based on a one-game sample size. K.D. Cannon had a touchdown grab in week 2. He and Traveon Samuel will each get some targets in the passing game. C.J. Jones and Kyree McLean each picked off a pass in the opener, and Meffy Kolomatangi recovered a fumble for the Vegas defense. Veteran Nate Criswell handles the kicking duties.
