Breakdown
RATTLERS
Arizona did what it expected to do in its season opener; namely, pull away in the second half and dominate the way to a win at home. The Rattlers are the clear favorites to challenge the defending champion Massachusetts Pirates, and they resembled that last week. They face a Strike Force team which promises to be improved from the squad they swept, 4-0 in 2019. Drew Powell looked like his usual self against the Gladiators last week. The veteran quarterback completed 59 percent of his passes with three touchdowns, but with two interceptions. He also ran for 79 yards with a 7.3 yards per carry average. Malik Williams scored twice on the ground and once through the air, and will be expected to pick up the slack in the running game. Both of Todd Athey's touchdown grabs came in the fourth quarter and came on his line two catches on the day. Braxton Haley and Jamal Miles will figure into the passing game as well. Davontae Merriweather was named IFL Player of the Week for his nine-tackle performance last week, and Brandon Ezell had an interception for the defense. Ernesto Lacayo hit is only field goal try of the game, but failed on two point after tries.
STRIKE FORCE
Of all the teams who have lost a game so far this season, San Diego has scored the second-most points. Had the Strike Force's called time out against the Vegas Knight Hawks been honored by the referees, they could be coming into this game with a win. The ball was at the one-yard line and Vegas may have had one more chance to punch it in. It was a nice effort for the Strike Force, who had not taken the field in over two-and-a-half years. Veteran Cory Murphy accounted for three touch downs on the day; one through the air and one on the ground. Backup quarterback Joe Newman, the more mobile of the two, rushed for a pair of touchdowns. It's unknown if head coach Dixie Wooten will run a rotation offense at the position, so that remains to be seen. Davonte Sapp-Lunch is one of the better running backs in the league, and rushed for two touchdowns in the opener. Marques Rogers is the lead receiver, though he was covered heavily last week. Look for Amechie Walker and Justin Clarkson to see some targets in this game. Lineman Terrence Fullum and Javian Williams lead the defense. Tanner Kuljian handles the kicking duties.
