Blizzard 54, Barnstormers 40

DES MOINES, IA - Max Meylor threw for 209 yards and four touchdowns as the Green Bay Blizzard completed the season sweep with a 54-40 win tonight over the Iowa Barnstormers at Wells Fargo arena.
The win, Green Bay moved to 7-2 and at least temporary sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference standings. The Blizzard have an identical record in conference play. They entered this week tied with the Frisco Fighters for first. Frisco is at the San Diego Strike Force in two days.
It's also the third win in three tries against the Barnstormers this season. They took the first game, 35-24, on March 23. They won the second game, 40-33, on April 26. Both those games were at Green Bay. The Barnstormers, who fell to 2-7 with the loss, lead the all-time series 14-11 and a 10-3 mark at home.
The Barnstormers took the opening kickoff and converted it into a 50-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui to take an early lead. The Blizzard wasted no time getting on the board. Max Meylor hit Lowell Patron, Jr. behind coverage for a 45-yard touchdown. The Barnstormers had more success on their second drive which culminated with Darius-James Peterson tossing a 16-yard strike in the back of the end zone to Darren Wilson, Jr. They followed that up with a deuce from Rui on the following kickoff. After Meylor hit harry Ballard III with a long strong to set the ball at the two, EJ Burgess rushed in from two yards to give Green Bay a 14-12 lead with 5:05 left in the first quarter. Rui put Iowa up by a point three minutes left with his second field goal of the night; a 27-yarder. Rui added his second deuce of the game on the ensuing kickoff and the Barnstormers led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The Barnstormers' defense forced the Blizzard's Andrew Mevis into a 58-yard field goal. The kick was short and returned by Iowa's Jefferson Fritz to the 23 yard line. After a pair of sacks forced Rui into a 55-yard field goal try, but the snap bounced over the end zone dasher board for a safety. Green Bay scored on an eight-yard scramble around the right sideline. Iowa responded with a seven-yard strike from Peterson to Keshaun Taylor in the right side of the field. Jaylin Cagle barreled his way into the end zone to put Green Bay back up. Iowa had the ball again with 12 seconds left and no timeouts, but they were unable to generate points. The Blizzard went into halftime with a 30-24 lead.
Cagle returned the second half kickoff 38 yards to the Iowa 10. Mevis' 24-yard field goal extended the lead to nine points three-and-a-half minutes into the third quarter. The Barnstormers cut into the lead with a 20-yard strike from Peterson to former Blizzard receiver Keshaun Taylor. Rui added another deuce to knot the contest at 33-33. Meylor hit Skyler Perry, the backup quarterback playing as a receiver, for an 11-yard touchdown to put the Blizzard up by a touchdown. The Barnstormers once again tied the game when Peterson found Wilson for a 21-yard touchdown through the air.
Meylor's six-yard touchdown toss to Ballard diving over the dasher board in the end zone put Green Bay back up by seven. Peterson was sacked for a 16-yard loss on fourth-and-goal at the Blizzard six which forced a turnover on downs. Meylor's 24-yard catch-and-run touchdown to Ballard put the Blizzard up by two touchdowns. Iowa turned over the ball on their next possession, giving Green Bay a chance to run out some of the clock. They did just that, running down the clocK to 1:09 as a 50-yard field goal try from Mevis went wide right. The Barnstormers had another chance, but a Peterson pass was intercepted by Kevin Ransom II of the Blizzard.
Meylor finished 16 of 27 with those 209 yards and four picks. He also rushed for a touchdown. Ballard caught seven passes for 124 yards and two scores. Ethan Culberson, who was signed just last week, had a total of eight tackles and Ravarius Rivers added seven; six of which were solo.
Peterson got the start for Iowa as Kyle King was out with a torn right labrum. He completed nine of 22 passes for 128 yards, four touchdowns and an interception. Wilson had six receptions for 88 yards and two touchdowns. J'Van France led the defense with nine tackles, and Simeon Gatling had eight.
Green Bay outgained Iowa in total offense by 92 yards. The difference came i receiving yards with an edge of 209 to 128. Peterson's last-minute interception was the only turnover of the game by either team. The Blizzard were penalized 10 times for 90 yards and the Barnstormers were cited five times for 30 yards.
Both teams are back in action next week. The Blizzard will host the Quad City Steamwheelers on May 31 with kickoff set for 5:05 p.m. The Barnstormers will visit the Sioux Falls Storm on June 1 for a 5:05 p.m. Times listed are pacific daylight time.
