ANALYSIS
Cedar Rapids won the first four meetings between the teams, but Iowa has won the past three, all occurring during the 2017 season. The mnost recent meeting ended in a 56-54 Barnstormers win on May 13, 2017. The Titans were the victors in the initial meeting, 51-20, on February 28, 2015. That was the Barnstormers' first game in the IFL after moving over from the Arena Football League, and it featured the largest margin of victory by either team in the series. Titans head coach Marvin Jones is 0-1 all-time against the Barnstormers, that coming on a 33-21 loss to Iowa last season when he was head coach of the Colorado Crush. This is the first of three meetings between the teams. The Barnstormers, located in the state's capital of Des Moines, is just a two-hour drive from Cedar Rapids; the closest distance between any two teams in the IFL.
The Barnstormers were on their way to a perfect record until running into the Sioux Falls Storm in week 4. The Storm have appeared in eight straight United Bowls, winning the IFL championship in six straight seasons from 2011-2016. The Barnstomers have never beaten the Storm in eight tries; seven in the regular season and one in the playoffs. The teams were knotted at 31-31 heading into the fourth quarter, but Sioux Falls outscored Iowa in the quarter, 21-9 to give the Barnstormers their first loss of the season. Head coach Dixie Wooten is 21-14 overall in the IFL, with a 0-2 post-season record. The Barnstormers are tied for second in the IFL standings with the Storm and the Arizona Rattlers. All three teams have identical 2-1 records. The Nebraska Danger are along atop the IFL standings at 3-0.
Drew Powell has become the one of the premiere quarterbacks in the IFL. He leads the league in total offense at 213.0 yards per game. He also has thrown for 7 touchdowns while rushing for 5. At times, Powell has shown signs of dominance with his dual thread ability. He leads the league in total rushing yards and rushing yards per game at 77.3. He is second only to the Green Bay Blizzard's Jasen Oden, Jr. in rush attempts with 50 compared to Oden's 56. Powell has completed 60.3 percent of his passes this season. Iowa has a pair of talented receivers, with Brady Roland and Ryan Balentine located in the top seven in the league in receptions. Roland is fifth in the league in receiving yards with 175 and Balentine is eighth with 149. The Barnstormers are, however, in search of a reliable third receiver. Donavan Williams is efective on the ground, holding a 3.1-yard average with a pair of rushing touchdowns. Zachary Allen's 21 total tackles lead the team, and Bryce Enyard's 3 interceptions lead the IFL. He also has 180 total tackles on the season. Allen leads the team with 3 tackles for loss, and Jourdan Wickliffe has an interception to add to his 14.5 total tackles. Cody Barber has hit 5 of 9 of his field goal attempts with a long of 33. One of those attempts was from beyond 50 yards.
The Titans have talent, and they were competitive with the Danger right down to the final minute in their loss to the Nebraska Danger in week 4. The Titans were tied with the Danger at 26-26 with 2:21 left in the fourth quarter, but saw the Danger pull ahead. Still, Cedar Rapids pulled to within two points with 38 seconds left. Nebraska scored four seconds later to put the game out of reach. Despite being just 1-3 on the season, the Titans have shown signs of life. While it will be a tough call on a short week to battle the Barnstormers, the Titans have a chance to upend last year's United Conference playoff entrant (with the IFL's six teams this season, divisions have been eliminated. Including their four games this season, the Titans' all-time IFL record sits at 47-45.
Quarterback Jake Medlock is a strong early season candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He leads the IFL with 192.2 passing yards per game and 14 touchdown tosses. Medlock has completed 61.7 percent of his passes on the season, and also has both attempted and completed more passes than any other quarterback this season. That's not surprising, as the Titans rely on the passing game much more than the running game. Connor Hollenbeck is steady in the receiving game, and his 5.5 catches per game leads the IFL. Wide receiver Marquel Wade saw his first action of the season in week 4 and delivered. Wade totaled 6 receptions for 82 yards and a game-high 3 touchdowns. Thomas Tyler leads the team in rushing yards per game, and is third on the team in receiving yards per game. Medlock went to him early and often, and Wade figures to be a main target going forward. Defensive backs Rodney Barnes and James Calhoun each have 19.5 total tackles. Calhoun led the IFL with 9 interceptions this season, but has yet to have a pickoff yet this season. Ricarlo Bell has the teams only two sacks. Michael Georgetti is 3 of 7 on his field goal attempts, with a long of 23 yards. Two of those tries were essentially punts as they were attempted from over 50 yards.
