ANALYSIS
Cedar Rapids won the first four meetings between the teams, but Iowa has won the past four, all occurring over the past two seasons. The most recent meeting ended in a 59-45 Barnstormers' win. The Titans were the victors in the initial meeting, 51-20, on February 28, 2015. That was the Barnstormers' first game in the IFL after moving over from the Arena Football League, and it featured the largest margin of victory by either team in the series. Titans head coach Marvin Jones is 0-2 all-time against the Barnstormers with one of those losses coming in a 33-21 decision last season when he was head coach of the Colorado Crush. This is the second of of three meetings between the teams, with the third also to be played in Des Moines. The Barnstormers, located in the state's capital of Des Moines, are just a two-hour drive from Cedar Rapids; the closest distance between any two teams in the IFL.
The Titans are coming of seven straight losses, the most notable of which is their 84-83 loss to the Arizona Rattlers in week 10. That game is the likely favorite for the IFL's 2018 game of the season.. Cedar Rapids led by 18 early in the fourth quarter only to see the Rattlers complete a rally with Darrell Monroe's 11th rushing touchdown of the game, with just two seconds left. The Titans faced the Rattlers last week as well, falling by a 57-42 count in Cedar Rapids. The Titans are averaging 57.7 points in their past three games, and have discovered some offensive capabilities during at least stretches of those three games. While it will be a tough call on a short week to battle the Barnstormers, the Titans have a chance to upend last year's United Conference playoff entrant (with the IFL's six teams this season, divisions have been eliminated). Including their nine games this season, the Titans' all-time IFL record sits at 47-50.
Quarterback Jake Medlock remains a strong candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. He leads the IFL with 190.2 passing yards per game and 31 touchdowns. He has completed 61.6 percent of his passes on the season, and has both attempted and completed more passes than any other quarterback this season. That's not too shocking since the Titans have relied on a pass-heavy offense. That said, the team is becoming a bit more two-dimensional on offense since Raphael Lawson-Gayle has taken over the duties at running back. He rushed for 116 yards and 2 touchdowns against the Rattlers two weeks ago, and 55 yards and a score last week against those same Rattlers. With leading receiver Connor Hollenbeck on Short Term Injured Reserve, Marquel Wade, Javon Bell and Jordan Smith make up the receiving group. Wade led the team with 6 catches for 85 yards and two touchdowns last week against Arizona. James Calhoun's 45.5 total tackles, 3 tackles for loss and 5 pass break ups pace the Titans' defense. He also has an interception and a fumble recovery. Linebacker Moses White has 43 total tackles, while Ricarlo Bell leads the team in sacks with 4.5 and 8.5 tackles for loss. Zeke Arevalo has taken over the kicking duties over the past two games, and has hit 2 of his 3 field goal attempts with a long of 22 yards. His only miss was a blocked attempt last week.
The Barnstormers have won three straight after falling to the Nebraska Danger, 43-32, on March 30. After holding off the Sioux Falls Storm, 49-42, in Sioux Falls last week, Iowa finds itself in sole possession of second place in the IFL standings. The win was the first-ever win over the Storm in the three-and-a-half seasons the Barnstormers have been in the IFL. The Barnstormers Stand at 6-2, just a game behind the Rattlers in the standings. They'll have a chance to sweep the season series over the Rattlers with a date in Arizona on May 20. Iowa, which won both of its games while Drew Powell was working out with the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League, saw Powell return last week to lead the win over the Storm. Head coach Dixie Wooten is 25-15 in the regular season as head coach of the Barnstormers.
Despite missing those two games during his CFL workout, Powell remains first in rushing among all IFL quarterbacks with 599 yards and has 85.6 yards per game on the ground. He is completing a league-high 64.2 percent of his passes and has tossed 17 touchdowns against just two interceptions. Jamal Tyler has gotten the call at running back for the past couple of games, and Donavan Williams can also take some of the heat off of Powell on the offensive side. Iowa features one of the most talented receiving trios in the IFL, Brady Roland, Ryan Balentine and Sheldon Augustine make for a formidable trio. Roland leads the group thus far, averaging 13.8 yards per catch. He and Balentine, who averages 10.7 yards per catch, each have caught 9 touchdown passes. Augustine also can figure into the rushing game, as he has scored twice on the ground in 2018. Zachary Allen leads the team with 46 total tackles to go along with his 4.5 tackles for loss. Bryce Enyard leads the IFL with interceptions with 7 to go along with his 43.5 total tackles and team-leading 8 pass break ups. B.J. Bennett's 7 tackles for loss leads the team, while D'Vonn Brown paces the pass rush with 1.5 sacks. Cody Barber is one of the more accurate kickers in the IFL. He's hit 10 of 18 of his field goal attempts with a long of 33 yards. Six of his eight misses have come from 37 yards or further.
