ANALYSIS
The Storm and the Danger meet for the third and final time this season. Sioux Falls has won 12 of the 13 overall meetings in the series, as well as all three post-season games between the teams. Those were three straight United Bowls; 43-20 in 2013, 63-46 in 2014, and 62-27 in 2015. The Storm, which have won seven straight regular season games in the series, topped Nebraska in the teams' most recent meeting on April 21 by a 62-48 count. The Danger's lone win over the Storm came on March 2, 2013 when they came out on top, 30-21. The teams are among the longest-tenured teams in the Indoor Football League. The Danger are in their eighth season in the league, and the Storm are the only team to have been a member in all 10 seasons of the current IFL.
The Danger seem in free fall. They've lost four straight and five of their last six. Since their 47-25 loss to the Blizzard on May 5, they have made numerous roster changes over the past several days, including releasing both quarterbacks, Jesse Scroggins II and Moses Skillon. Also gone is defensive back Daniel Masifilo, who has one of the team's three interceptions and led the team with 6 pass break ups. Since taking over for the injured Damien Fleming in week 3, Scroggins put up good numbers, but struggled to put up wins. Head coach Mark Stoute has added Gregory Hankerson, Jr. At the time of this writing, Hankerson is the only quarterback on the roster and likely will be the starter in this game. Nebraska still controls its own destiny. The Danger are in fourth place in the standings, which would put them as the fourth seed in the playoffs. They face the Blizzard at home before heading on the road to face the Arizona Rattlers.
Hankerson is 6'0" and 190 lbs. according to his draftscout.com profile in 2017. He threw for 3,770 yards in two seasons at Norfolk St. University, along with 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. During that time, he also rushed for 963 yards and 9 touchdowns. Barring a more high-profile indoor football QB signing, he will be thrown in to the fire against the Storm. Angelo Pease will aim to take some pressure off the quarterback making his first start. Pease is averaging 3.4 yards per carry and has 7 touchdowns. He's the only running back to start all nine of the Danger's games this season. Pease also has 13 receptions for 127 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eric Thomas averages 62.6 receiving yards per game and leads the IFL with 14 receiving touchdowns. Gregory Dent, Jr. and Kenzel Doe are formidable receivers, each averaging 10.7 yards per catch and have 8 and 3 touchdowns, respectively. All three have started each of the Danger's nine games. Myke Tavarres and Darion Monroe lead the team in total tackles with 56. Tavarres has 6.5 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. Xzavie Jackson leads the league in tackles for loss with 12 and sacks with 4.5. Jackson also has recovered a pair of fumbles. Brad Hatfield has hit only 31 percent of his field goal attempts with a long of 38 yards. 17 of his 20 missed have come from 30 yards or beyond.
Sioux Falls suffered a hiccup in its efforts to reach a ninth consecutive United Bowl. The Storm have won six of the past seven of those IFL championship games, including six straight from 2011 to 2016. The Storm are among the class of the IFL and consistently among the top powers of the IFL, if not the top Power. That hiccup came last week in a 49-42 loss to the Iowa Barnstormers. The defeat dropped the Storm into third place of the standings and, if the playoffs were to begin this week, they would face those Barnstormers on the road in the first round, which doubles as the Semifinals. Sioux Falls has a golden opportunity to pick up a trio of wins over the Danger, Cedar Rapids Titans and Green Bay Blizzard before a rematch against the Barnstormers in Des Moines on June 8. A win over the Barnstormers could enable the Storm to re-take second place in the standings should it come down to a tiebreaker. The Danger, Titans and Blizzard are a combined 6-20 this season.
Lorenzo Brown as as good as it gets at quarterback, and will look to get his Storm back on track. Brown is third in passing yards per game at 142.6. He's completing 59.5 percent of his passes and has 23 passing touchdowns against 4 interceptions. He also is a force in the running game as he ranks first among quarterbacks with 15 touchdowns on the ground, and second in the same group in rushing yards with 418. Lyle McCombs is a capable running back which the Storm use to keep opposing defenses honest. He is averaging 4.1 yards per carry and 37.3 yards per game. He also has 17 receptions for 148 yards. McCombs, who also has returned kicks, leads the team with 98.5 all-purpose yards per game. Mike Tatum and Judd Harrold are a potent receiving duo. They have combined for 58 receptions for 886 yards and 20 touchdowns on the season. Tatum is averaging 58.0 yards per game and Harrold comes in at 45.5. Jabari Gorman has team-highs of 4 interceptions and 6 pass break ups to go along with his 49.5 total tackles. Chris Martin has recorded 3.5 sacks and 5 tackles for loss, along with 4 pass break ups. Miles Bergner is the IFL's most accurate kicker, hitting 15 of 22 field goal attempts for a long of 45 yards (twice). All seven of his misses have come from 33 yards or further.
