ANALYSIS
The teams have played nine games in the IFL with the Titans winning the first four, but with the Titans winning the most recent five. Most recent was a Barnstormers' 48-21 win on May 11. Previously this season, in week 5, the Barnstormers claimed a 59-45 win. The Barnstormers can complete the season sweep with a win in this game. The Titans were the victors in the initial meeting, 51-20, on February 28, 2015. That was the Barnstormers' first game in the IFL after moving over from the Arena Football League, and it featured the largest margin of victory by either team in the series. Titans head coach Marvin Jones is 0-3 all-time against the Barnstormers with one of those losses coming in a 33-21 decision last season when he was head coach of the Colorado Crush. The Barnstormers, located in the state's capital of Des Moines, are just a two-hour drive from Cedar Rapids; the closest distance between any two teams in the IFL.
The Titans are riding a two-game winning streak. It's the first time they've more than a single game since a stretch in late 2016 when they closed out the season with seven straight wins, as well as a 66-36 win over the Wichita Falls Nighthawks in the Wild Card round of the playoffs. They went on to fall to the Storm in the United Conference Championship game. Things seem to have fallen apart after that run. Cedar Rapids won just a single game last season, They swept the Green Bay Blizzard this season, and rallied to put away the Nebraska Danger last week. A win over the Barnstormers would be a feather in their cap on the season. The Titans have been eliminated from the playoffs, but could equal the Danger's win total, despite losing the tiebreaker and missing out on that fourth and final playoff spot due to losing the season series to Nebraska, 2-1.
Along with Lorenzo Brown, Jr. of the Storm, Jake Medlock is the only IFL quarterback to start every game for his team. Medlock has been outstanding this season. He's a rookie out of Florida International University who is leading the league in all major passing categories. He leads in passing yards per game at 183.3; more than 35 yards per game over the Storm's Brown, who is second. He is completing 62.1 percent of his passes and also leads the IFL in touchdown passes with 45. While Raphael Lawson-Gayle leads the team in rushing, wide receiver Marquel Wade served as the lead back in the Titans' win over the Danger last week. Appearing in nine of the Titans' 13 games, Wade leads the team with 12.2 yards per catch and is tied with the team lead in receiving touchdowns with 13. Javon Bell has 529 yards through the air and 13 touchdowns, and Connor Hollenbeck returned from Short Term IR last week to catch 3 passes for 34 yards. James Calhoun adds a team-high 5 interceptions and 6 tackles for loss to his team-leading 76 total tackles. Ricarlo Bell is a force on the defensive line, recording a league-leading 7 sacks and has 14 tackles for loss. Moses White comes in with 66.5 total tackles and 4 fumble recoveries. Michael Georgetti has connected on just 5 of 23 field goal tries with a long of 51 yards. Sixteen of those misses have come from 31 yards or beyond.
In search of home field advantage throughout the playoffs, the Barnstormers are in their own driver's seat. If they win, they will host a first round playoff game (which doubles as the semifinals). They are tied atop the standings with the Arizona Rattlers and Sioux Falls Storm. Iowa would hold the tiebreaker over both teams in the event of a three-way tie due to strength of schedule. The Barnstormers have played both teams three times this season, coming away with a combined record over the teams. The Rattlers and Storm have a weaker strength of schedule, primarily due to only playing each other twice. Should the Barnstormers win, they would host the Danger in the opening round of the playoffs. A loss could either land them as the second or third seed in the playoffs and seeding would be determined by the results of the Rattlers game at the Nebraska Danger and the Storm's home contest against the Blizzard.
As Drew Powell goes, so does the Barnstormers' offense. Powell has been outstanding and is likely will be the Offensive Player of the Year in the IFL. Dual-threat quarterbacks are a key in the IFL, and Powell is quite possibly the best in the game. He is completing a league-high 67.7 percent of his passes and his fourth in passing touchdowns 32. Fourth may not sound all that impressive, but it is when it's considered that the top three have played 13 games while Powell has played 11, it is impressive. Even more so is the fact that Powell leads the IFL in rushing yards at 870. He also has scored 20 rushing touchdowns while averaging 4.8 yards per carry. Donavan Williams rushed for 2 touchdowns last week in the team's loss to the Storm. Brady Roland is emerging as the go-to receiver, and averages 13.4 yards per catch and has 18 receiving touchdowns. Ryan Balentine has racked up 54 receptions for 582 yards and 13 touchdowns. Zachary Allen leads the team in total tackles with 66.5 and has 6 tackles for loss. Bryce Enyard's 8 interceptions lead the IFL. He also has 13 pass break ups and 66 total tackles. B.J.Butler leads the team with 9 tackles for loss. The Barnstormers have turned to Josh Gable for their kicking duties, but he's hit just one of eight attempts with all seven misses coming from 33 yards or beyond. Gable has made 12 of 19 extra point attempts.
