Steamwheelers Breakdown
Quad City has had an up-and-down season, but earned a playoff berth with a win over the Iowa Barnstormers at home in the season finale, and with the Sioux Falls Storm's one-touchdown loss to the Frisco Fighters on the IFL's regular season finale last week. They won three of their last four games with the only loss coming to the Eastern Conferences top seed Frisco Fighters in North Texas. This is the Steamwheelers second season in the IFL and their first playoff berth in the league. They come in averaging 41.5 points per game (seventh) and are giving up 40.1 (eighth).
The Steamwheelers have plenty of talent on the roster. They are led by one of the best quarterbacks in the league in E.J. Hilliard. He is a true dual thread out of the backfield and capable of bringing the team to a point in which they can challenge any team in the league. Hilliard is completing 61 percent of his throws for 1,547 yards with 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions in just 11 games. He also has rushed for nearly 50 yards per game with a team-leading 22 touchdowns. Kerrion Moore adds six scores on the ground. Mike Carrigan and Keyvan Rudd are a terrific one-two punch in the receiving game with 597 and 551 yards, respectively. They combine for 22 touchdown grabs on the season.
Nathan Sheets is one of the top defenders in the league with his 89 tackles and9.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and 9.5 tackles for loss. Naquez Pringle leads the team with four sacks and Jaylin Swan had three sacks to go with 33.5 tackles. Kimo Naehu has been reliable as the team's kicker over the course of the season.
Pirates Breakdown
While Massachusetts has struggles at times this season, things are looking up for the defending champions heading into the playoffs. The return of quarterback Alejandro Bennifield gives the team a solid chance at a repeat. It will be an uphill battle, however, as they face a hungry Steamwheelers team who wishes to advance as well. Should the Steamwheelers advance to the Eastern Conference championship, they could even host that game should the Iowa Barnstormers topple the conference's top see, the Frisco Fighters. They score 42.0 points per game (sixth) and allow 40.1 (fourth).
With Bennifield back, the Pirates' offense seems whole again. He didn't miss a beat in the Pirates' 43-point win in the season finale at home over the San Diego Strike Force. He rushed for a pair of touchdowns and threw for another as they closed out the season. Bennifield, the 2021 United Bowl Most Valuable Player, appeared in nine games, completing 66 percent of his throws for 141.1 yards per game with 27 touchdowns and five picks. Deddrick Thomas compliments the backfield with his 330 rushing yards to go along with a half-dozen scores. Thomas Owens led the lead during the regular season with 899 receiving yards and is second with 21 scores. Darren Carrington II adds 599 yards and 12 touchdowns, while Isaac Zico had 435 yards and seven scores.
Aarion Maxey-Penton and Lukas Denis lead the defense with 55 tackles apiece, and seven and three interceptions, respectively. Maxey-Penton also has 17 pass break ups. Chucky Williams comes in with 43.5 tackles and Khalid Wooten has 40.5. Each defender also has two interceptions. Veteran Josh Gable is the team's kicker.
