Sugar Skulls Breakdown
Tucson makes a return trip to the playoffs. The Sugar Skulls made it to the postseason with a 7-7 during their 2019 inaugural season. They lost a close one in the first round to the Sioux Falls Storm, 50-47, and failed to earn a playoff spot last season. This is a new opportunity for head coach Dixie Wooten and quarterback Daquan Neal, who both have playoff experience with the Iowa Barnstormers in 2019. The Sugar Skulls and Wranglers have played some competitive and tight games over the past two seasons, and this one promises to follow suit. The Sugar Skulls are scoring 48.9 points per game (second) and are allowing 49.3 (12th).
Neal is third in the the league with 2,117 passing yards and second with 48 touchdowns. He also has 305 yards and 17 touchdowns on the ground. Neal missed one game this season while he was at a tryout in the Canadian Football League. Mike Jones is one of the top running backs in the IFL and leads with 35 touchdowns, while accumulating 690 yards on the ground. Quinton Pedroza leads the team with 613 receiving yards to go with 10 touchdown grabs. Carrington Thompson, Sr. has 547 yards and a team-high 15 scoring catches. Raheem Harvey rounds out the receiving group with 259 yards and five scores.
Ronald Collins comes in with a team-high 39 tackles and five sacks, while Robert Rolle IV adds 37 tackles and leads the the defense with three interceptions. Jovon White contributes 32.5 tackles, and four sacks and Maurice Jackson enters this game with 31 tackles and five sacks of his own. Logan Justus has been reliable for the Sugar Skulls this season, appearing in all 16 games.
Wranglers Breakdown
Northern Arizona is the surprise story of the 2022 IFL season. The Wranglers' could only improve from their 1-13 record from last year's inaugural season. With proven veteran indoor/arena football coach Les Moss taking the reigns, the team started over as if it were a new expansion team. In fact, just one player from last year's squad was on the opening-day roster. The Wranglers came together this year with a capable and resourceful offense, and the league's top defense. Their schedule included an eight-game winning streak in the middle of the season. The Wranglers score 40.9 points per game (eighth) and allow a league-low 30.4.
Kaleb Barker has played well having started all but one game for the team this season. He is a dual-threat quarterback who completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,908 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also led the team with 676 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Israel Tucker came on and has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. He has 282 rushing yards and 11 scores while adding 262 yards and a score in the passing game. Quinton Randoph leads the receivers with 41 catches for 526 yards and 13 touchdowns. Glen Gibbons has 428 yards and 10 scores, while Jerrime Neal adds eight touchdowns.
The Wranglers dominating defense is led by the 57.5 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Trae Meadows enters this contest with 46 tackles and a pick, while Kenton Bartlett has recorded 40.5 tackles and 3.5 sacks. JaQuan Artis leads the team with nine sacks to go with 13 tackles for loss and Bill Atkins adds three picks. Kicker Adrian Trevino will appear in his second game.
