ANALYSIS
This is the third of three meetings this season, with the Danger winning the first two; 44-31 in the season opener in Grand Island, and 50-41 in Cedar Rapids. This will be the eighth all-time encounter between the teams, with the Danger leading the series 5-2. Nebraska is 2-1 overall in Cedar Rapids. The Titans won the first meeting, 42-38, on June 16, 2012. The Danger won the final meeting, 52-46 in overtime last season. Despite their close geographical proximity, the teams have played just those seven games in the past seven seasons, and the teams did not meet in 2013 nor in 2014. The Danger are the only team the Titans will see twice at home over the course of the 2018 season.
Nebraska controls their own playoff destiny. Two months ago, it looked as though they could be fighting for home field advantage in the semifinals (a.k. first round). Home field is out the window at this point, as the best the Danger can do it earn the fourth seed which means they will visit which ever of the Arizona Rattlers, Iowa Barnstormers or Sioux Falls Storm attains that position. A win here over the Titans, who have been eliminated from playoff contention for the second straight season, would clinch that fourth seed. Should the Danger lose this one and lose at home against the Rattlers in week 17 (they have a bye in week 16), and if the Green Bay Blizzard can eek out a pair of wins over the final three weeks, the Blizzard would overtake the Danger for the final playoff spot. Green Bay owns the tiebreaker over Nebraska due to winning the season series between the teams, 2-1.
Nebraska is on its third starting quarterback of the season, Gregory Hankerson, Jr. Interim co-head coaches Adam Shackleford and Pig Brown, the Danger have one job; to get the team into the playoffs. Shackleford, the offensive coordinator, will look to Hankerson to take the opportunity of facing the team with the league's worst record and pull out a win. Hankerson is completing just 45.2 percent of his passes, but went 13 of 24 for 123 yards with 3 touchdowns last week against the Rattlers, while rushing for 84 yards and a touchdown. Truthfully, he's probably more potent on the ground than through the air. Angelo Pease is a solid compliment with his grind-it-out rushing style and ability to catch passes out of the backfield. Eric Thomas is one of the best in the business at receiver. He leads the league in receptions with 56, in receiving yards with 658 and is tied in receiving touchdowns with 16. Kenzel Doe and Gregory Dent, Jr. are averaging 10.6 and 10.1 yards, respectively. The receiving trio have all played in each of the Danger's 12 games this season (the only IFL receiving trio to do so). Darion Monroe adds 4.5 tackles for loss and 5 pass break ups to go along with his team-leading 68.5 total tackles. Myke Tavarres has 65 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 3 sacks. Team sack leader Xzavie Jackson has been put on Short Term Injured Reserve, and the team has brought in former Spokane Empire lineman Michael Boyefio. Brad Hatfield has hit only 29.5 percent of his field goal attempts, but nailed kicks of 47 and 43 yards last week at Arizona. Twenty-five of his misses have come from 30 yards or beyond.
Despite being eliminated from playoff contention, the Titans are playing for pride and head coach Marvin Jones will look to have them ready for an upset. The Titans have had some strong performances this season; most notably their 84-83 loss in thrilling fashion to the Rattlers in Phoenix. Cedar Rapids has talent, but has been unable put together full games to get itself back into the win column since week 2. The Titans have lost nine straight, but face a Danger team which has dropped its last seven. This could be a prime opportunity for the Titans to come away with their second win of the season and put a slight damper into Nebraska's playoff hopes. Jones' group will have to have one of its better games of the season and, behind a strong passing attack, could find itself in just that position. Jones, a former NFL linebacker, is in his second season as a head coach in the IFL, having coached the Colorado Crush over the second half of last season.
For the most part this season, Jake Medlock has been the IFL's best passers. He far and away leads the league in passing yards (1,928), passing yards per game (175.3) and passing touchdowns (36). He is completing 59.8 percent of his passes and has tossed just 6 interceptions on the season. He remains a strong candidate for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Medlock also has rushed for 12 touchdowns on the season. Raphael Lawson-Gayle is a threat at running back each time he touches the ball. He averages 30.7 yards per game and has 6 trips to the end zone. Lawson-Gayle can also be a force in the kick return game as well. he may see more time in that role, as Daniel Lindsey has been placed on Season Ending Injured Reserve. With receiving leader Connor Hollenbeck on Injured Reserve, It will be up to Marquel Wade, Javon Bell and Jordan Smith to make themselves available as Medlock's targets. In just seven games, Wade has amassed 465 yards and leads the IFL with 66.4 receiving yards per game. Bell is averaging 42.6 yards per game, while Smith comes in at 26.8. James Calhoun 65 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions and 5 pass break ups. Ricarlo Bell leads the team with 4 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss, and Mosers White has recovered 4 fumbles. Michael Georgetti has hit just 5 of 18 field goal attempts with a long of 51 yards. Fourteen of his 15 misses have come from 30 yards or beyond.
