Gladiators Breakdown
For the second time in two seasons in the IFL, Duke City has made the postseason and for the second time in two seasons in the league, that postseason trip to Phoenix to battle the Rattlers. In last year's semifinal, Darrell Monroe's three-yard run proved to be the difference in a Rattlers' 58-55 win which advanced them to the United Bowl. The Gladiators, who won their last two games of the regular season, hope for a reversal of fortune. Should they win this game, they would be on the road to take on the winner of the Western Conference's other first round game between the Northern Arizona Wranglers and Duke City Gladiators. They score 42.6 points per game (fourth) and allow 42.9 (10th).
After Nate Davis went down to injury in the season opener, Ramone Atkins was brought in and immediately made a splash despite having never played indoor/arena football. In just 14 games, Atkins threw for a league second-best 2,169 yards while completing 58.5 percent of his passes with a league-high 50 touchdowns and 10 picks. He rushed for 311 yards and led the team with 15 touchdowns. Devontae Jackson added 313 yards and 10 scores. Jared Elmore comes into this one with team-highs 789 yards and 20 scores. Gregory Dent, Jr. has 629 yards with 15 scores. Eriq Swiftwater and recently signed Demarius Washington also figure into the passing game.
The Gladiators defense features Jayson Serda with 73.5 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, five sacks and an interception. Byron Cooper accumulated 71.5 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and a team-leading eight sacks. Dexter Reese had 48.5 tackles and three interceptions, while Roderick Chapman added 44.5 tackles and three picks. Jimmy Thomas had 5.5 sacks. Kevin Goessling served as the team's kicker for the majority of the season.
Rattlers Breakdown
Arizona is looking to earn a trip to the Dollar Loan Center IFL National Championship game (formerly designated the United Bowl) for the fourth time in the five seasons they've been in the league (SCtoC does not count 2020 as a "season" since just two games were played before the campaign was cancelled league-wide due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Rattlers won six of their last seven regular season games, including their last four. Three of those last four consisted of wins over the other three playoff teams in the Western Conference. They are used to being in this situation and with a veteran core, they are poised for a deep playoff run. They score a league-leading 52.9 points per game and allow 31.2 (second).
As Drew Powell goes, so does the Rattlers offense. The former IFL Most Valuable Player led the Iowa Barnstormers to a 42-38 win in the United Bowl win over the Sioux Falls Storm in 2018. He is the league's leading passer with 2,271 yards this season and third with 45 touchdowns. Powell also led the team in rushing with 697 yards (third in the IFL) and 23 touchdowns. Shannon Brooks rushed for 349 yards and 16 touchdowns, while adding 263 yards and seven scores in the passing game. Braxton Haley was second in the league with 861 receiving yards and fourth with 17 touchdowns. Jamal Miles adds 632 yards and 11 scores. Jarrod Harrington and Isaiah Houston round out the group.
Teyvon Williams had 63.56 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and six sacks. Dillon Winfrey led the league with 10 interceptions to go along with 55 tackles and 14 pass break ups. Three of those picks came in each of the team's last three games. Kyree Woods added 63.5 tackles and six interceptions to the defensive effort. The Rattlers re-signed veteran lineman Chris McAllister this week. Kicker Ernesto Lacayo supplies veteran playoff experience.
