Steamwheelers Breakdown
Quad City had an up-and-down season, but earned a playoff berth with a win over the Iowa Barnstormers at home in the season finale, and with the Sioux Falls Storm's one-touchdown loss to the Frisco Fighters on the IFL's regular season finale two weeks ago. They have won four of their last five games (including playoffs) with the only loss coming to these Eastern Conference's top seed Frisco Fighters in North Texas. This is the Steamwheelers second season in the IFL and their first playoff berth in the league. They averaged 41.5 points per game (seventh) and gave up 40.1 (eighth).
To say the Steamwheelers pulled out a thriller in their first round overtime win over the Massachusetts Pirates is an understatement. After Massachusetts took to overtime, it took a one-yard run from E.J. Hilliard, coupled with Kimo Naehu's clutch extra point, sealed their first IFL playoff win. Hilliard completed 10 of 17 throws for 146 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He also rushed for 43 yards and three scores. Rudd caught three passes for 53 yards and a touchdowns, and Kerrion Moore had four catches for 46 yards. Nathan Sheets' 6.5 tackles led the Steamwheelers defense. He also had a forced fumble which he recovered.
The Steamwheelers have plenty of talent on the roster. They are led by one of the best quarterbacks in the league E.J. Hilliard. He is a true dual-threat out of the backfield and capable of bringing the team to a point in which they can challenge any team in the league. Hilliard is completed 61 percent of his throws for 1,547 yards with 27 touchdowns and nine interceptions in just 11 games during the regular season. He also rushed for nearly 50 yards per game with a team-leading 22 touchdowns. Moore added six scores on the ground. Mike Carrigan and Rudd are a terrific one-two punch in the receiving game with 597 and 551 yards, respectively. They combined for 22 touchdown grabs on the season.
Nathan Sheets is one of the top defenders in the league with his 89 tackles and 9.5 tackles for loss, two interceptions and 9.5 tackles for loss during the regular season. Naquez Pringle led the team with four sacks and Jaylin Swan had three sacks to go with 33.5 tackles. Naehu has been reliable as the team's kicker over the course of the season.
Fighters Breakdown
Frisco entered the playoffs with a nine-game winning streak, which is now at 10 after their opening round 64-39 win over the Iowa Barnstormers. The Fighters have won 15 of the past 16 games (including playoffs. The Fighters' only loss in that span came to the Arizona Rattlers on April 30; meaning they have not lost a game in over three months. The Fighters are making their second-straight IFL playoff appearance and trip to the semis, as they fell to the Massachusetts Pirates last season in the playoff semifinal. Frisco averaged 48.2 points per game this season (third) and allowed 36.9 (fifth).
The Fighters had little troubles in their first-round home win over the Barnstormers. They outscored Iowa 20-0 in the second quarter and rode the momentum for the win. T.J. Edwards finished seven of 10 for 116 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. he also rushed for 69 yards and three scores. Justin Rankin matched Edwards' three touchdowns while rushing for 47 yards. Jerminic Smith hauled in four passes for 84 yards to go with his two touchdown grabs. Wafford led the defense with 11 tackles and Santos Ramirez recorded an interception. Caleb Bailey, Larry Tharpe, Jr. and Zaycoven Henderson each had a sack.
Edwards emerged as the starting quarterback during the season, with Blake Sims being more utilized as a utility player on the field. Edwards completed 66 percent of his throws for 1,224 yards with 20 touchdowns and four picks during the regular season. He also rushed for 634 yards and 25 touchdowns over the season. Rankin's 713 yards off 153 carries and 24 scores. He also had four receiving touchdowns. Jerminic Smith led the team's receiving group with his 60.0 yards per game (720 total) and 14 touchdowns. Sheldon "JuJu" Augustine was just behind with 702 yards and eight touchdown grabs. Tyron Laughinghouse and Spencer Tears round out the Barnstormers' receiving group.
Trey Wafford's 73.5 tackles led the defense, and he added two sacks and two interceptions. Charles Williams came into the postseason with a team-high six sacks, along with 47.5 tackles and 12.5 tackles for loss.
