ANALYSIS
This game marks the 10th all-time meting between these teams, with the Danger holding a slim 5-4 edge in the series. They met in week three of the season with the Danger winning 59-23. Nebraska jumped out to a 52-14 halftime lead and were never threatened in the second half of that win. Both teams have different looks in the eight weeks since that game. The Danger lost quarterback Damien Fleming in that game to a season-ending injury, and has been replaced by former Salt Lake Screaming Eagles quarterback Jesse Scroggins II. The Blizzard went through an overhaul three weeks ago as they relieved Chris Williams of his head coaching duties and replacing him with interim head coach Corey Roberson. The team also released quarterbacks Christian Lemay and Raymond Cotton, as well as running back Jasen Oden Jr. The teams meet for a third time on May 18 in Grand Island, Nebraska.
After starting the season 3-0, Nebraska has gone 1-4 in their past five games, including a current three-game skid. A meeting against the 0-7 Blizzard could be just what the doctor ordered. All four of their losses came to teams which reside on the top half of the current IFL Standings. It also includes two losses at home to the Sioux Falls Storm (45-37 and 62-48). The Danger are still in a good position for a return trip to the playoffs. They are 4-4 and unless the Blizzard or the 1-7 Cedar Rapids Titans go on a roll over the second half of the season, should plan for some post-season play. The upcoming schedule is rough, as they face the Blizzard and Titans once each after this game. They also have road games against the Storm and the Arizona Rattlers, and a home game to end the regular season against the Rattlers. Mark Stoute is 49-21 as an IFL head coach.
Scroggins has been somewhat effective in his time as starter, but will need to step it up over the second half of the season as the Danger make their playoff run. Scroggins is second among IFL quarterbacks in yards per completion at 12.2. He is completing 52.9 percent of his passes with a 16 to 4 touchdown to interception ratio. He also has rushed 37 times for 100 yards and four touchdowns. Angelo Pease is a solid running back who can also hurt opposing defenses in the passing game. Pease is fourth this season among active running backs with 243 yards and has 6 touchdowns. He also has 11 catches for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eric Thomas leads the IFL in receiving yards with 481, and is second in receiving yards per game at 60.1. Gregory Dent, Jr. has 375 receiving yards and has caught 8 touchdown passes. Kenzel Doe has caught 22 passes for 239 yards and a pair of touchdowns. All three receivers have started each of the Danger's eight games this season. Linebacker Myke Tavarres' 53 total tackles pace the Danger defense. Darion Monroe has has 4.5 tackles for loss and 4 pass break ups to go with his 52 total tackles. All-time IFL sack leader Xzavie Jackson leads the IFL in sacks this season with 4.5. Brad Hatfield has made 9 of 25 field goal attempts on the season with a long of 38 yards. Thirteen of the 16 missed have come from beyond 30 yards, often as an alternative to a punt, which is not a play in the IFL.
Since taking over Roberson has brought in Bryan Hicks as his new starter at quarterback for the Blizzard. Hicks gives the team a more formidable presence in the passing game than either of his predecessors. Aside from their June 9 game against the 1-7 Cedar Rapids Titans, facing the Danger could account for their first win of the season. The fact this game is at the Resch Center in front of faithful Green Bay football fans could help. The Blizzard have some talent on the roster. Roberson will need to meld the team together for this one, but with two games under his belt, Hicks could lead the Blizzard to a surprise win. It's been a tough season, but a win could turn into a bright spot of the season. The Blizzard face the Arizona Rattlers at home, followed by a trip to Nebraska to face the Danger. Roberson is 0-2 in his young tenure as interim head coach of the Blizzard.
In just two games, Hicks has 305 passing yards, averaging 152.5 yards per game. In the Blizzard's first five games, they mustered just 308 passing yards. Roberson and Hicks have the daunting task of trying to reshape the team during the middle of a season. He does not run much, but Hicks has a touchdown on the ground to his credit. Serge Trezy has become the new rusher for Green Bay, and averages 44 yards per game. While only appearing in three games, Trezy has 143 rushing yards, is averaging 4.7 yards per carry and has scored two rushing touchdowns. During the first six games, Chris Malott was the only receiver to have caught a touchdown pass. During that time, the rush-heavy Blizzard offense utilized the passing game sparingly. Malott averages 12.9 yards per receptions and 36.7 yards per game. Jereme Jones has 10 catches for 139 yards, and Andre McDonald comes in with 7 receptions for 107 yards. All three should benefit from the new passing attack of the Blizzard. Kick returner/defensive back B.J. Hill, already an IFL Hall of Famer, is averaging 20.4 kickoff return yards and has returned three of those for touchdowns. Brian Boudreaux has 7 tackles for loss to go along with his 23 total tackles. Josh Francis and Robert Metz each have recorded 2 sacks this season. Jeff Budzien has returned as kicker, replacing Jordan Endries. Budzien started the season, hitting 3 or 3 of 7 of his field goal tries with a long of 43 yards. All four of his misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
