Wranglers Breakdown
Northern Arizona is the surprise story of the 2022 IFL season. The Wranglers' could only improve from their 1-13 record from last year's inaugural season. With proven veteran indoor/arena football coach Les Moss taking the reigns, the team started over as if it were a new expansion team. In fact, just one player from last year's squad was on the opening-day roster. The Wranglers came together this year with a capable and resourceful offense, and the league's top defense. Their schedule included an eight-game winning streak in the middle of the season. The Wranglers scored 40.9 points per game (eighth) and allowed a league-low 30.4.
The Wranglers were up to the challenge in their playoff opener; a 19-point win over their in-state rival Tucson Sugar Skulls last week at home where they have gone 9-0 (including playoffs). Barker completed 11 of 16 passes for 104 yards with two touchdowns and no picks. He rushed for 68 yards and three touchdowns. Ramaud Chiaokhiao-Bowman caught both of Barker's touchdown throws, and Jerrime Neal had three caches for 31 yards. Bill Atkins led the defense with 7.5 tackles and Darin Hungerford had seven. Trae Meadows and Tevin Homer each recorded an interception apiece.
Barker played well having started all but one game for the team this season. He is a dual-threat quarterback who completed 56 percent of his passes for 1,908 yards and 38 touchdowns. He also led the team with 676 yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground. Israel Tucker came on and has gotten stronger as the season has progressed. He had 282 rushing yards and 11 scores while adding 262 yards and a score in the passing game. Quinton Randolph led the receiving corps with 41 catches for 526 yards and 13 touchdowns. Glen Gibbons has 428 yards and 10 scores, while Jerrime Neal adds eight touchdowns.
The Wranglers dominating defense was led by the 57.5 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks. Meadows entered the playoffs with 46 tackles and a pick, while Kenton Bartlett recorded 40.5 tackles and 3.5 sacks. JaQuan Artis paced the team with nine sacks to go with 13 tackles for loss and Atkins added three picks. Veteran kicker Craig Peterson was signed prior to the playoffs.
Rattlers Breakdown
Arizona is looking to earn a trip to the Dollar Loan Center IFL National Championship game (formerly designated the United Bowl) for the fourth time in the five seasons they've been in the league (SCtoC does not count 2020 as a "season" since just two games were played before the campaign was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic). The Rattlers won six of their last seven regular season games, including their last four. Three of those last four consisted of wins over the other three playoff teams in the Western Conference. They are used to being in this situation and with a veteran core, they are poised for a deep playoff run. They scored a league-leading 52.9 points per game and allowed 31.2 (second).
Arizona had little difficulties dispensing of the visiting fourth-seeded Duke City Gladiators in the first round last week. With the game tied 14-14 after the first quarter, the Rattlers defense held the Gladiators scoreless through the final three quarters in a 53-14 win. Drew Powell completed 11 of 14 passes in the game for 175 yards with five touchdowns and no picks. Shannon Brooks rushed for 38 yards and two scores, and had five catches for 69 yards and a touchdown. Jamal Miles added two scoring grabs. Kyree Woods had a career night with a franchise-high four interceptions in the game to go with 5.5 tackles. Dillon Winfrey added four tackles and a pick.
As Powell goes, so does the Rattlers offense. The reigning IFL Most Valuable Player led the Iowa Barnstormers to a 42-38 win in the United Bowl win over the Sioux Falls Storm in 2018. He led league with 2,271 passing yards this season and was third with 45 touchdowns. Powell also led the team in rushing with 697 yards (third in the IFL) and 23 touchdowns. Brooks rushed for 349 yards and 16 touchdowns, and added 263 yards and seven scores in the passing game. Braxton Haley was second in the league with 861 receiving yards and fourth with 17 touchdowns. Miles added 632 yards and 11 scores. Jarrod Harrington and Isaiah Houston round out the group.
Teyvon Williams had 63.56 tackles, 15 tackles for loss and six sacks in the regular season. Dillon Winfrey led the league with 10 interceptions to go along with 55 tackles and 14 pass break ups. Three of those picks came in each of the team's last three games. Kyree Woods added 63.5 tackles and six interceptions to the defensive effort. The Rattlers re-signed veteran lineman Chris McAllister prior to last week. Kicker Ernesto Lacayo supplies veteran playoff experience.
