ANALYSIS
The Storm and the Danger meet for the second of three games this season. Sioux Falls has won 11 of the 12 overall meetings in the series, as well as all three post-season games between the teams. Those were three straight United Bowls; 43-20 in 2013, 63-46 in 2014, and 62-27 in 2015. The Storm, which have won seven straight regular season games in the series, defeated Nebraska, 45-37, in the teams' most recent meeting on April 7. The Danger's lone win over the Storm came on March 2, 2013 when they came out on top, 30-21. The teams are among the longest-tenured teams in the Indoor Football League. The Danger are in their eighth season in the league, and the Storm are the only team to have been members in all 10 seasons of the current IFL.
The Storm have won five of their last six games and, if not for a slow start two weeks ago against the Arizona Rattlers, they might be looking for their seventh straight win in this one. Sioux Falls has averaged 54.2 points per game in their five wins on the season. Lorenzo Brown passed just 13 times in the April 7 win at Nebraska, completing 7 of those attempts for 125 yards and 4 touchdowns. He also rushed a dozen times for 39 yards. The Storm took a 28-13 halftime lead, and held off the Danger in the fourth quarter en route to the 45-37 win. Mike Tatum and Judd Harrold each caught 3 passes, respectively, and each had a pair of touchdown receptions. Kurtiss Riggs, the longest-tenured IFL head coach, has a 112-21 regular season coaching record with the Storm.
Brown is second in the IFL in passing yards per game at 138.6. He leads the league in passing yards her attempt (8.4) and passing yards per completion (13.5). Brown also is first among active 2018 IFL quarterbacks with his 62.1 percent completion percentage. Brown's 329 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns put him atop the list of active quarterbacks in those categories. Lyle McCombs, with his 64 rushes for 303 yards and 8 touchdowns, takes pressure off Brown. McCombs is averaging 47.0 yards per game on the ground. He also has caught 13 passes for 125 yards. Mike Tatum is averaging 53.1 receiving yards per game, good for fourth in the IFL. He is a consistent target for Brown and should figure heavily in this game. Judd Harrold, who leads the team with 9 touchdown catches, has caught 22 passes for 277 yards. Jabari Gorman leads the Storm defense with his 38.5 total tackles, 3 interceptions and 5 pass break ups. Chris Martin has 2.5 sacks, while Owen Williams has 2 of his own. Martin also has 2 fumble recoveries this season. Martin also has 4 tackles for loss. Daniel Lindsey is averaging 19.6 yards per kickoff return and has taken one back for a touchdown. Miles Bergner leads the IFL in field goal percentage at 68.8 percent. He is one of only two kickers who has made more field goals than he has missed (the Iowa Barnstormers' Cody Barber is at 60 percent). Bergner has a long field goal of 45 yards.
After Beginning the season 3-0, the Danger have dropped three of their last four games. Part of that could be attributed to a quarterback change, though Jesse Scroggins II has performed well since Damien Fleming went down to injury in week 3. Over those last four weeks, Nebraska has faced the other three plus-.500 teams four times. Their only win over that portion of the schedule came on March 30 with a 43-32 home win over the Iowa Barnstormers. Scroggins completed 12 of 24 passes for 140 yards and 5 touchdowns in the Danger's April 7 loss to the Storm. He completed three passes each to Gregory Dent, Jr., Angelo Pease, Kenzel Doe and Eric Thomas. All four receivers caught at least one touchdown pass, with Thomas catching two. Head coach Mark Stoute is 45-21 overall as an IFL head coach.
Despite the 1-3 record in their past four game, Scroggins has played well. He is completing 54.5 percent of his passes and his 14 passing touchdowns is tied for fourth in the IFL. He also is second in passing yards per attempt (6.8) and passing yards per completion (12.5). Scroggins has also rushed for 99 yards and 3 touchdowns over the course of the season. Angelo Pease, a dual thread running back, is leads the team in rushing yards, and has 4 touchdowns on the ground. Pease is effective in the passing game as well. He has 11 catches for 106 yards and 3 touchdowns. Eric Thomas is one of the league's top receivers. He leads the IFL in receiving yards per game at 63.9 and his 447 yards through the air, as well as his 12 receiving touchdowns, lead the league as well. Thomas also has rushed for a touchdown. Gregory Dent, Jr., with his 29 receptions for 330 yards and 6 touchdowns, is a nice complimentary piece to Thomas. Kenzel Doe rounds out the receiving group with 20 receptions for 213 yards and 2 touchdowns. Myke Tavarres adds 2 sacks, 5 tackles for loss and a fumble recovery to his team-leading 50 total tackles. Darion Monroe has 43.5 total tackles and 4.5 tackles for loss. Defensive lineman Xzavie Jackson, the IFL's career sacks leader, has 4.5 quarterback takedowns in 2018. Brad Hatfield is 7 of 20 on his field goal tries with a long of 38. Ten of those misses have come from beyond 30 yards.
